Wow, I have no words for Mr. Barry such an amazing idea to relate with each and very student individually.
Just wow. Chapter I. Introduction
This chapter states the background of the study and the statement of the problem. Background of the Study Animated shows on television are very popular nowadays. They are made not just to entertain viewers but also to generate profit. An animated show's success is dependent on how the viewers patronize the show. Companies and firms invest money to sponsor animated shows aired on the local television networks as a form of advertisement. The more children there are who watch the show, the more viewers to see the advertisement. This paper aims to show the types of animated shows elementary and high school students like to watch. This is to know what certain characteristics of the different types of animated shoes are sought after by the viewers. By doing so, animators can make better animated shows that will appeal to the viewers' preference. Statement of the Problem "Types of Animated Shows Watched by Elementary and High School Students in UE Manila" The following questions are answered in this research: 1. Which animated shows are popular among elementary and high school students? 2. Why do they watch animated shows? 3. What do they like about their favorite animated shows? 4. Which animated characters do they prefer? 5. Under what type of animated shows do the most watched show belong? Chapter II. Review of Related Studies This chapter shows the related studies and literature utilized in this research. Styskal (2007) states that cartoon may be divided into five groups: 1. Cutsey. Mainly for the younger crowd of 6 years old and below. Some cutsey can be written with adult appeal. The focus is on the basic morals and fables. 2. All Around Fun. Comical; has a great appeal and pokes fun at people and politics. 3. Action Adventure. Usually explore mature themes despite the target audience of ten year olds. Plenty of explosions, puzzles and quests. 4. Adventure/Mature. It is intended for the more mature viewers who don't like excessive sex and violence. 5. Mature Adult. Sexual themes, profanity and violence. Truly adult centered. Laughs may come from the lowest denominator. Jose (1997) states that majority of the respondents (4-17 year olds) liked cartoons referred to as violent in nature. However, the respondents did imitate the characters in them. They watched cartoons just because they made them laugh and amazed. Most of them also believe that such shows, although violent I nature, contain values. Domenden (1997) states that based on some statistics from various articles published, it is asserted that most children love to watch cartoons more than any other variety show seen on television. They give attention to what is appealing to the sight and senses. Hence, despite the advent of popular media such as radio and print, cartoons remain a popular entertainment program as revealed on latest surveys. Definition of Terms The following terns are defined operationally as used in this research: Advertisement. This term refers to the strategy of attracting consumers through media such as the television. Animated shows. This term refers to television programs that are made using a series of drawings or caricatures (cartoons), or though computer generated graphics. Animators. This term refers to someone who makes animate shows. It is also synonymous to a cartoonist. Cartoons. This term refers to a television program made by playing a series of drawings so as to create a jerky "moving scene". Nowadays, cartoon making is usually aided by the computer. Viewers. This term refers to the audience of animated shows. Chapter III. Methodology This chapter presents the methodology of this research. Method of Research This research uses the survey method. Population Out of the entire population of the basic education department of UE Manila, the sample population of 32 individuals are chosen; 16 random elementary students and 16 random high school students. Data Gathering Procedure The following animated shows from the different types of animated shows are used as choices for the sample population to choose from: Cutsey - Dora the Explorer, Strawberry Shortcake, Blue's Clues, and Barney. All Around Fun - Spongebob Squarepants, Bugs Bunny, Pokemon, Doraemon and Digimon. Action Adventure - Transformers, Slam Dunk, Dragonball Z, Ghost Fighter, and Prince of Tennis. Adventure Mature - Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Samurai X, and Flame of Recca. Mature Adult - South Park, Simpsons, Happy Tree Friends, and Celebrity Deathmatch. From the provided list, the sample population of 32 students is to choose five (5) animated shows that they like to watch. Then the animated shows are ranked based on their respective frequencies/votes and the top five animated shows are categorized to determine the types of animated shows most watched. For questions 6, 8 and 10 of the questionnaire (see the questionnaire) where the respondents are asked to select three answers, only the top three answers are dimmed significant based on their respective frequencies/votes. To determine the most watched type of animated show, the total frequency of all animated shows in a category is divided by the number of animated shows provided for each category. TF Category Average = ---------- n where TF = total frequency per category n = number of animated shows provided in a category The category which obtains the highest value is the most watched type animated show. Time Frame The study is conducted within a period of one semester only (SY 2008-2009, Second Semester). Any information derived from this study may no longer be valid beyond the time frame. Most students watch animated shows more than thrice a week; generally in the afternoon most probably because it is the time of the day when most students get home from school. The majority spend 1-2 hours in a day in watching animated shows. In addition, the type or category of animated shows most watched by elementary and high school students is the All Around Fun followed by Adventure Mature and Action Adventure. What the viewers seek in these categories are action, humor and fight scenes. The study reveals that the most likeable animated character is also Spongebob Squarepants. Viewers like funny, cute, powerful and kind animated characters. On the other hand, the most unlikeable animated character is Barney. Viewers do not like boring, evil and ugly animated characters. As mentioned, the information above may be used as a guide by animated show makers in producing interesting shows. Local television networks may utilize the information above in determining the ideal time in airing animated shows and what show to air. In doing so, they maximize the number of target viewers who get to see the paid advertisements during commercials. The researchers recommend that a similar study be conducted in a different location with a greater number of respondents coming from various age groups. Since animated shows are seasonal and the viewers' preferences are variable with respect to time, the researchers also recommend that the study be done periodically. |
